MILD (MINIMALLY INVASIVE LUMBAR DECOMPRESSION) BY VERTOS MEDICAL Q & A

What is MILD by Vertos Medical?

MILD by Vertos Medical is an advanced surgical procedure for the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis, which is a degenerative back condition that leads to narrowing of the spine.

The traditional surgical treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis is an open spinal decompression surgery in which a portion of your vertebra, specifically the lamina, is removed to enlarge the space, relieving the pressure and pain. This procedure is an open surgery that requires a lengthy recovery.

With MILD, Dr. Ramsook is able to remove a small portion of your lamina through a small incision no larger than a baby aspirin, leaving most of your spinal canal intact. This minimally invasive procedure is conducted under local anesthesia and requires no stitches.

Mild is recommended for lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication, which occurs when your spine compresses the nerve root, causing symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling in your low back, buttocks, and legs.

What can I expect during mild by Vertos Medical?

Mild by Vertos Medical is an advanced outpatient surgical procedure. Dr. Ramsook uses fluoroscopic guidance, an imaging tool that allows him to view your spine without the need to create large incisions, to conduct the procedure.

After the area of your back has been numbed with a local anesthetic, Dr. Ramsook inserts special tools into your back to remove the portions of vertebral bone and cartilage causing the narrowing of your spinal canal.

The entire procedure takes about an hour and most people are up and walking within an hour after the procedure has been completed. You should notice an improvement in your pain immediately following the procedure.
